About Environment Design

I am an environment designer--a way of thinking about open space unique from any other design field. I am also a dedicated professional who has worked with children, education professionals, and parents since I founded Martin Environment Design in 1974. I have personally helped build and test every design I have ever drawn, and I practice a design process that involves the creative feedback of my clients and their children. My company builds complete play environments. I have also organized and directed hundreds of volunteers in communities seeking to add their own sweat equity to the building process to help cut costs. For me, building and designing playscapes for the betterment of our communities is a labor of love. We handle everything, which includes design, project management, and installation.

About Creating a "Place to Be"

Because of changes in our society we clearly need better places to be social, places that don't involve the television, or absorption in mass media. Our lives are about choices, but the world is full of uniform ideas and uniform products. Our towns are full of franchises and our parks and playgrounds have, unfortunately, followed suit. At Environment Design, I design more interesting places to be. Places to meet each other and explore our imaginations. A place with a more natural feel. My designs typically include elements for active play and physical challenge, areas for social play, and areas for passive play, thereby contributing to the complete range of a child's social development. I also design unique areas for infant toddlers and have a range of design options for special needs children and for therapeutic play.
