Quieter Places for Social Play
A place to be quiet, contemplate, sway, or sit, dig, think,
watch, and learn. In life's highly active environments,
sometimes we need a place to slow down. When we play together,
both as children and as adults, we depend on our social
skills. When doing activities together we fall back on our
ability to innovate in these social situations in order
to work together well. It's the quieter places that give
us the extra time to get to know each other better, and
that knowledge helps us grow as individuals and as a community.
Whether it's public seating areas, sand or water play areas,
sitting behind the wheel of a play vehicle, or play-acting
in play houses, forts, castles, or shops, such spaces create
social opportunities that complement the more individualistic
challenges of a playground's climbing walls, fire poles,
monkey bars, and slides.
