Natural Wonders

If I were a beetle, or a squirrel, or maybe a bird of prey I would play in the woods all day.

Here are scenes from two playgrounds we have build for nature centers in Stamford, Connecticut and Englewood, New Jersey. These designs are characterized by tight harmony with the natural environments in which they are situated and by an imaginative kinship with the animal kingdom. By using design metaphors derived from animal habitats, these playgrounds encourage children to imagine that they are the bug crawling on a leaf, the badger rooting in it's lair, the hawk perched high on it's nest, the beaver shooting along the river's rapids or scampering up a river bank, or the spider creeping slowly along its intricate web. The materials we use for construction provide great design flexibility and allow us to create truly imaginative play environments such as these.
